Before beginning any ritual, it is important to prepare yourself mentally and physically. You may want to take a cleansing bath, or shower, and meditate or perform some grounding exercises to center yourself. Gather any materials you will need, such as candles, incense, and offerings for the forest spirits.

A ritual to honor Balder’s light and invoke joy, hope, and renewal during the Yule season.

• 1 Altar space
• 1 Candleholder
• 1 Incense burner or bowl for offerings

Supplies

• 1 gold or yellow candle
• 1 sprig of mistletoe
• 1 offering bowl
• Offerings: honey-mead, seasonal fruits, or evergreen sprigs
• sun-shaped or radiant symbols to adorn the altar

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Sacred Space

• Select a quiet space for the ritual. Clear the area of distractions.
• Set up an altar with the gold or yellow candle at the center to represent Balder’s light.
• Place the mistletoe and offering bowl on the altar. Adorn the space with symbols of the sun, evergreen sprigs, or anything that reminds you of Balder’s radiance.

Step 2: Create Sacred Energy

• Light the incense or sage to cleanse the space.
• As the smoke rises, focus on the intention of honoring Balder and inviting his light and hope into your life.

Step 3: Invocation of Balder

• Light the gold or yellow candle.
• Speak the invocation:
• “Balder, Shining God of Light and Joy,

  I honor you on this sacred Yule night.

  As the sun begins its return, so too may your essence shine upon us.

  Bring renewal to our spirits, hope to our hearts, and joy to our lives.”

Step 4: Offerings to Balder

• Place the honey, mead, fruits, or evergreen sprigs in the offering bowl.
• Say:
• “With these offerings, I honor you, Balder.

  May they carry my gratitude for your light and blessings.

  May your energy bring renewal and joy to the days ahead.”

Step 5: Reflection and Renewal

• Sit quietly before the altar. Focus on the candle’s flame, imagining it illuminating your inner self. Reflect on the joys and challenges of the past year.
• Consider what you wish to release and what you hope to cultivate as the light returns. Speak these intentions aloud or hold them silently in your heart.

Step 6: Closing the Ritual

• Thank Balder for his presence, saying:
• “Balder, Shining God, I thank you for your light and blessings.

  As your essence fills this space, may it also guide my journey.

  Hail to you, Balder, and hail to the returning sun.”
• Extinguish the candle, knowing its light remains within you.
