Introduction

A closing ode to the Eleventh Day of Yule — releasing the old and welcoming the light of new beginnings.

As the eleventh day of Yule draws to a close, the songs of wassailers fade into the crisp winter air, leaving behind echoes of laughter, gratitude, and renewal. This day stands as a threshold—a sacred pause between what has been and what is yet to come. The revelry of the Eleventh Day, from honoring Idunn’s promise of rejuvenation to Bragi’s melody of expression, weaves into a symphony of harmony and joy.

This ritual serves as the final note of Yule’s penultimate day, inviting us to release lingering heaviness and embrace the magic of new beginnings. It celebrates the quiet after festivity, the peace that follows gratitude, and the renewal that dwells within stillness.

Ritual Basics

Before beginning any ritual, it is important to prepare yourself mentally and physically. You may want to take a cleansing bath, or shower, and meditate or perform some grounding exercises to center yourself. Gather any materials you will need, such as candles, incense, and offerings for the forest spirits.

About the Closing Rite of Renewal

The Eleventh Day of Yule carries the essence of transition—where abundance meets intention, and celebration gives way to contemplation. In Norse and modern pagan traditions alike, the close of Yule symbolizes both completion and preparation. The gods have been honored, the hearth has been blessed, and now it is time to align our spirits with the turning of the Wheel once more.

This rite calls upon the blessings of Idunn, Bragi, and the spirits of prosperity invoked earlier in the day, uniting their gifts into a harmonious farewell. Through candlelight, song, and gratitude, we release the old year and open our hearts to renewal, luck, and inspiration.

  • 3 Candles (Gold for Idunn, Blue for Bragi, Green for Prosperity)
  • 1 Chalice or cup
  • 1 Bell, chime, or singing bowl
  • 1 Small bowl of water
  • 1 Journal or parchment

Supplies

  • A few apple slices or dried fruits
  • A written poem, song, or verse
  • A coin, clover, or token of prosperity

Instructions

Step 1: Setting the Space

  • Dim the lights or gather near a hearth or candlelight.
  • Arrange your three candles in a triangle formation: gold to the east, blue to the north, and green to the south.
  • Center your chalice and symbolic offerings before them.

Step 2: Invocation of Gratitude

  • Light each candle in turn, saying:
  • “For Idunn, whose apples promise renewal, I give thanks.
For Bragi, whose voice kindles inspiration, I give thanks.
For the spirits of prosperity, whose blessings fill my home, I give thanks.”
  • Pause to feel the warmth and glow of the flames uniting their light.

Step 3: The Reflection of Renewal

  • Gaze into the water bowl and let the candlelight reflect upon its surface.
  • Speak softly:
  • “In this reflection I see what was and what may yet be.
I release what no longer serves, and I welcome the dawn of renewal.”
  • Drop a single apple slice or dried fruit into the water as an offering to Idunn’s eternal youth and regeneration.

Step 4: Honoring Inspiration

  • Hold your written poem, song, or heartfelt words in your hands.
  • Read or sing them aloud, dedicating them to Bragi.
  • Allow the sound of your voice to fill the air, even if softly—each word becoming a thread of magic spun into the coming year.

Step 5: Inviting Prosperity and Joy

  • Lift your coin, clover, or prosperity charm and say:
  • “From the joy of Yule to the promise of spring,
May abundance, laughter, and harmony sing.”
  • Place the charm upon your altar or near your doorway as a symbol of ongoing luck.

Step 6: The Final Blessing

  • Raise your chalice of wassail or cider and offer a toast:
  • “To Yule’s blessings that linger in heart and hearth—
To the year ahead, may harmony guide us all.”
  • Take a sip and sprinkle a few drops into the water bowl as a libation to the gods and spirits of renewal.
  • Ring the bell or chime three times, sealing your space with sound and intention.
